On The Information, Beck Hansen is seriously bummed out. Not that he sounds it as much as he did on 2002's laconic, Fred Neil-worshipping Sea Change. Technology and stuff, and the way it gets in the way of human interaction, is the subtext if not the full-on concept at play here. Recorded with art-rock anal-retentive Nigel Goodrich at the helm, work began on this album not long after Sea Change but was shelved for a few years while Mr. Hansen made 2005's Guero with the Dust Brothers. Unsurprisingly, it sounds a bit like both of those. The trappings of minimalist pop, fuzzy folk, click-hop, hip-hop, baroque psychedelia, and funky pop are to be found on this endearing release. Like Jean Cocteau or David Bowie, Beck is an artistic chameleon whose greatest gift is knowing which artists to borrow from, and when. The cover artwork consists of stickers that you can arrange however you like, which perhaps appeals too much to your own nostalgic/retro, "Trapper Keeper" sensibilities. And yet, it's kind of awesome, something you can't believe has never been done before. Much like the album it adorns. --Mike McGonigalPrice: $19.99
Eden of the East scored a big hit in Japan when the series aired in spring 2009: in less than a year, two follow-up features continued the story, The King of Eden and Paradise Lost. Twentysomething Akira Takizawa wakes up in Washington, DC, buck naked and stripped of his memories: all he has is a gun and a super-sophisticated mobile phone that delivers anything he requests. He meets Saki Morimi, a college senior on her graduation trip to America, and returns with her to Japan. Takizawa tries to recover his memories, which may be linked to a pair of missile attacks on Japan and the disappearance of 20,000 NEETS (young men with No Employment, Education or Training). From his phone--which provides the equivalent of more than ?¥8 million (about $100,000,000), Takizawa learns that he is a sele?§ao, one of 12 agents charged by the mysterious Mr. Outside with saving a faltering, apathetic Japan. As he resolves the mystery of his identity, Takizawa gets help from Saki, her friends, and a hikikomori superhacker. Eden of the East was written and directed by Kenji Kamiyama, writer-director of the popular Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. Kamiyama once again demonstrates his exceptional skill at building suspense and weaving an exciting fantasy. The cyber-terrorism elements of Eden recall the "Laughing Man" mystery in Stand Alone Complex, but this time Kamiyama is working with his own characters and world, and the results are more intriguing. The taut scripts and a winning performance by voice actor Jason Liebrecht make Takizawa an appealing hero, even in the most improbable circumstances. Eden of the East ranks among the very best anime of 2010. (Rated TV MA: violence, nudity, risqu?? humor, alcohol and tobacco use) --Charles Solomon (1. I Picked Up a Prince, 2. Melancholy Monday, 3. What you see is rarely what you get with Jimmy Buffett. While he may contend that he is the king of slackers, a modern day Dean Martin whipping up fizzy rum drinks under the palm trees in a silk Hawaiian shirt, this best-selling author and raconteur is actually the thinking man's party animal. His deceptively breezy lyrics and lazy charm belie a shrewd social commentator and a man not at peace with his world or his own mortality--taking well-aimed potshots at everything from cell phone culture to ancient Greek history to the threat of terrorism, as on the sharply ironic "Party at the End of the World." But having said that, all the unrest exhibited in these 14 songs makes for a far more interesting album than he's made in over two decades. Reflective, unstinting, and often nostalgic, the musician changes the tempo and the subject matter, swapping his usual languid island exhortations of alcohol and brief bikini tops for the fascinating emotional ambiguity of "Whoop De Doo," or the simple charm of "Nothing but a Breeze," which seems so autobiographical it's hard to believe that Buffett didn't write it. But the standout track is his chilling cover of Mary Gauthier's "Wheel Inside the Wheel," revealing exactly what kind of demons have been residing under the singer's ever-present baseball cap. --Jaan UhelszkiPrice: $13.96

Aron Ralston (played by James Franco) is traipsing alone through Utah's Canyonlands National Park, minding his own sweet-natured, loosey-goosey business, when an errant step drops him into a crevasse. That in itself wouldn't be so bad if he hadn't managed to get his right hand stuck between a heavy boulder and the side of the cavern--a cavern that will be his grave, if he doesn't figure out how to get himself out. Danny Boyle's film of this real-life 2003 incident builds up to what we all know is going to happen: Ralston must sever his arm between his elbow and wrist, after a few long, lonely days of avoiding the idea. (Superb casual line delivery by Franco: "So I found this great tourniqueta?|.") Because this is a film by the director of Slumdog Millionaire and Trainspotting, we can expect a barrage of visual high jinks, despite the fact that this story would seem to be a simple tale of a man stuck in the desert. Boyle deploys flashbacks and fantasies to fill up the screen, plus he gets some mileage out of Ralston's video camera--and, of course, this director can't resist juicing the soundtrack with pop tunes, from Sigur R?3s to Edith Piaf to Slumdog composer A.R. Rahman. Maybe Boyle is simply hyperactive, or maybe he's really onto something about what would happen inside the mind of a man left in extremis for an extended period (who wouldn't have a few Boyle-esque hallucinations, under the circumstances?). The cumulative effect is overbearing, but Franco's performance is spirited and endearing--he makes Ralston sufficiently "of life" that you definitely don't want to see this goofball soul be lost. --Robert HortonPrice: $39.99
